Description

This CME-accredited course will develop confidence in your ability to insert an intravenous line in a critically ill or premature newborn.

Course Overview:
Module 1: Principals of fluid balance
Module 2: Fluid and electrolyte balance in the neonate
Module 3: Principals for estimating fluid and electrolyte requirements
Module 4: Complications of IV therapy
Module 5: Management of IV therapy
Module 6: Anatomy and physiology of the vascular system
Module 7: Neonatal intravenous cannulation

This course is open to registered nurses, currently practising in a neonatal intensive care unit and is accredited with CME hours.

Objectives

After completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Describe the potential complications of IV therapy

2. Identify strategies to prevent complications occurring

3. Describe the signs and symptoms of these complications

4. Identify the difference between arteries and veins

5. Identify the venous sites available for cannulation in neonates

6. Demonstrate the correct technique for insertion of a peripheral line
