Description

This course is aimed at Community Pharmacists in England. It can also be used by nurses and other healthcare professionals that are authorised to administer the influenza vaccine under the NHS patient group direction.

Whilst the course covers the NHS service specification for community pharmacy in England, the other aspects of the course, such as injection technique, management of anaphylaxis, and basic life support can be used by any health care professionals globally. The information and guidance in this course is based on NHS England’s guidance and the information contained in the Green Book (Immunisation against infectious disease – updated September 2014).

When the course is completed and the multiple choice questions are answered, the participants will receive a certificate of completion of the ‘online refresher course’. This forms part of the recommended annual learning for health care professionals that vaccinate. The Health Protection Agency recommends that face to face practical training is undertaken every two years and that a refresher course, which can be online learning, is undertaken annually.

Objectives

The online refresher course is comprised of 5 learning videos with an additional introduction video (so 6 video’s in total) as follows:
1. Flu Jab Training Online Refresher Course Overview
2. Injection technique training. This covers: intramuscular injections, intradermal injections, subcutaneous injections and intra-nasal administration of the flu vaccine
3. Management of Anaphylactic reactions with adrenaline
4. Basic life support: this covers management of choking and performing CPR on a collapsed adult. It also covers use of AED devices
5. The NHS Service specification and PGD for community pharmacy
6. Theory of the influenza virus and its management
