Description

Evidence based Practice includes use of Diagnostic test to screen and monitor disease conditions. This course work covers concepts of Validity measures such as Sensitivity & Specificity in clinical decision making. Using likelihood ratio along with Fagans Nomogram is explained with clinical Case.

Objectives

To understand the importance of Precision and Validity measures for any diagnostic test
Precision is best understood by understanding the reproducibility, inter & intra observer variation of any new test and Validity measures accuracy as compared to gold standard in detecting the disease.
To understand the validity measures for diagnostic test
Sensitivity, Specificity, +ve & -ve Predictive value are important validity measures. Validity measure can be estimated from a two by two table comparing the test instruments vs gold standard. Defining gold standard is very important and it is important to critically appraise research article for the good standard of definition.
To estimate Likelihood ratio and apply it in clinical decision making
Clinical decision making based on good history an basic clinical presentation very useful in assessing pretest probability of disease. Using Fagans Nomogram clinical decisions ruling in and ruling out disease can be done effectively.

Additional Contributors

The OCULUS project aims to enhance optometry curricula within two higher education institutions in Israel and three in India by benchmarking these to the European Diploma and ensuring that evidence-based Practice (EBP) is taught effectively. Within this project we analyse the current EBP teaching methods in the different curricula by mapping courses within each curriculum to the five EBP steps (Ask, Acquire, Appraise, Apply and Audit). Acknowledge the good efforts of team OCULUS (https://oculus.erasmus-plus.org.il/mod/page/view.php?id=32) - Dr Catherine Suttle, City University for EBP module training. Wish to acknowledge Sankara Nethralaya for permitting to use the clinical images
