Issues Within the Optical Profession Regarding HIV/AIDS There is NO cure yet for AIDS, coupled with possible exposure of the HIV and Hepatitis virus in a medical office, every health care worker must understand the risk and recommended procedures for preventing infection.

Objectives
Upon completion of the course the participant should be able to: describe the difference between HIV and AIDS; list the primary routes of HIV infection; detail how AIDS effects the eye; describe the 3 transmission scenarios in a medical office; describe the Universal Precautions; describe how AIDS effects the public blood supply; discuss transmission and symptoms of the Hepatitis virus.

Ms. White is a graduate of Erie Community College, and is the former Program Director of the Opticianry Program at Mater Dei College in upstate New York - having taught there for 16 years. She is the 1995 National Federation of Opticianry Schools Educator of the Year. Debra served as the Chair for the Commission on Opticianry Accreditation from 1993-1995, and has held many positions in the New York State Society of Opticians. Ms. White is co-author of Management for Opticians, and has served on several VOSH missions to Mexico to provide eyewear to the needy. Currently, Debra is a contributing author to Vision Care Product News.
