Description

The anatomy and physiology of the lids, tear film and cornea as relates to the fitting and complications of contact lens wear are covered. Aspects of the lid movements with the blink, importance in maintaining the tear film over the cornea and the glands producing the tears are explained. The structure of the tear film, tear loss, tear tests and changes in tear film chemistry under different conditions is discussed. The anatomy and physiology of the cornea under normal conditions as well as when stressed with contact lens wear is covered.

Objectives

Objectives
The objective of the course is to give the student an understanding of the different aspects of the anatomy and physiology of the anterior segment of the eye that relates to contact lens wear. The practitioner should better understand the normal variations in the population, determine departures from normal, determine why adverse effects occur and be able to better explain aspects of contact lens wear to patients.

Dr Gerald Lowther O.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Lowther has spent his career providing patient care in the area of contact lenses, teaching contact lens courses in university settings, doing clinical research and lecturing internationally. He is past president of the American Academy of Optometry, National Board of Examiners in Optometry and the International Society for Contact Lens Research. He has published over 100 research papers and authored three books and numerous chapters in other books. He has received numerous awards. He retired from the School of Optometry at Indiana University as dean.
