Description

Being able to diagnose and correct problems that develop with contact lens wear is vital. This course covers the examination procedures used during follow-up visits. The case history and causes of discomfort and vision problems are explained. The examination of the patient with the lenses on including lens fit, refractive findings, lens surfaces and deposits are covered. The symptom of dryness, lens dehydration and methods of alleviating these symptoms including the diagnosis and correction of meibomianitis and blepharitis are explained and illustrated. The potential problems diagnosed once the lenses are removed are covered. Diagnosis, causes and treatment of lid changes, corneal edema, neovascularization, corneal staining, infiltrates, microcysts and ulcers are explained and illustrated.

Objectives
The objective of this course is to give a system of examination of patients wearing hydrogel lenses. Also to teach the methods of diagnosing and treatment of disorders that can occur with hydrogel lens wear.

Dr Gerald Lowther O.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Lowther has spent his career providing patient care in the area of contact lenses, teaching contact lens courses in university settings, doing clinical research and lecturing internationally. He is past president of the American Academy of Optometry, National Board of Examiners in Optometry and the International Society for Contact Lens Research. He has published over 100 research papers and authored three books and numerous chapters in other books. He has received numerous awards. He retired from the School of Optometry at Indiana University as dean.
