Course Outline:
1. Wavefront Science’s Applications in Vision Correction
A. Qualifying and quantifying higher order correction
1. Precision and stability of the lower (2nd) order astigmatic cylinder axis
2. HOA clinical awareness threshold of ≥ 0.4 RMS
3. HOA clinical differential threshold of ≥ 0.2 RMS
4. Contrast sensitivity (Modular Transfer Function - MTF) level of ≥ 0.4 for a 4 mm pupil diameter at a spatial frequency of 8 to 10 cycles/degree
B. Customized Corrective Approaches
1. Generic Correction Approach
a. Correcting the mean ranges of physical (e.g. lens power, sphericity) and demographic (e.g. age, pupil) lower and higher order factors.
b. Correction types
1) Traditional (2nd order) sphere/cylinder Rx
2) Corneal implants and pinhole optics
3) Aspheric intraocular lenses (IOLs)
4) Aspheric spectacles and contact lenses
5) Digital molding (in spectacle lenses)
6) Modulating media indices of refraction
2. Point-to-point “Custom” Approach
a. Correcting the patient’s Zernike polynomial point-by-point to achieve “customized” lower and higher order aberrations correction

Wavefront has been evolving as a clinical science in eye care for the past 20 years now. It started with refractive surgery in the 1990s when I became involved with it and it has been growing rapidly as a vision and eye care diagnostic science as well ever since. I published this textbook in 2009 with the goal of converting the complex mathematical and optical physics of wavefront science into understandable clinical, diagnostic and non-surgical and surgical corrective approaches for day-to-day practitioners’ use. The story is told over 6 chapters in a casual, ‘user friendly’ style with extensive graphic support. It’s actually an enjoyable – almost a fun read.
