Description

Following this session, attendees will have specific tips to apply towards making a good cytology prep, using the microscope to maximize visualization of cytology samples, and differentiating of inflammatory from noninflammatory samples. Emphasis will be put on how to recognize different tissue types (e.g. round, mesenchymal or epithelial tumors) and some of the cytologic determinants of malignancy.

Objectives

Learning Objectives:
• Be able to list the materials required to obtain cytology samples
• Be able to list at least 5 general cytologic criteria of malignancy
• Be able to list at least 5 nuclear criteria of malignancy
• Be able to identify cytologic characteristics of a round cell tumor, an epithelial tumor, and a mesenchymal tumor

Dr. Ruthanne Chun - Dr. Chun is a 1991 graduate of the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. She completed a 1-year internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at Cornell University and a 3-year residency in Comparative Oncology at Purdue University. Dr. Chun is currently section head of Clinical Oncology and a Clinical Professor of Oncology at the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. She is the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and Hospital Director of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and is the President-elect for the subspecialty of Oncology within the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
