Description

Since COPD is best managed through ongoing self-care by the patient, this module breaks down the most effective tactics that case managers can use when counseling patients. It details the team of players that CMs should include in the loop, as well as the user-friendly tenets of motivational interviewing, which can encourage more productive results with patients. It also covers the best practices for communicating with patients at their level of health literacy, and in a culturally and linguistically sensitive way. Finally, it covers end-of-life issues—from advance directives to the ways that CMs can assist bereaved families—and the standards of practice of the American Case Management Association (ACMA).

Debra Siela, PhD, RN, CCNS, ACNS-BC, CCRN, CNE, RRT

Debra Siela, PhD, RN, CCNS, ACNS-BC, CCRN-K, CNE, RRT has been faculty at Ball State University School of Nursing since 1990. She is an associate professor of nursing. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate level courses. Her direct care clinical experience included working as a staff nurse in intensive care and emergency department nursing for over twenty-five years.

Dr. Siela has been a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) or an advanced practice nurse since 1980. Her clinical focus has been working with patients who have pulmonary disorders and/or critical illness. She is not currently working in a CNS role.

Dr. Siela is also active in conducting research on falls risk and family presence during resuscitation. Her research work in the past has included dyspnea perceptions of people with COPD and patients receiving mechanically ventilation.

Active in many professional nursing organizations including the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, Dr. Siela presents often at the American Association of Critical Care Nurses annual education conference. She also presents research findings at various conferences.

Dr. Siela has authored and co-authored over 30 publications that include research findings, clinical topics, and book chapters. Her clinical topic publications focus on pulmonary and/or critical care nursing. She also often reviews manuscripts for several nursing journals.

Dr. Siela also enjoys her teaching role. She is a student advocate and mentors students throughout the undergraduate program. She continually searches for better methods on enabling students to think critically and look at the ""big picture"" as they learn to provide care for patients and clients. She also enjoys teaching graduate-level students and learns from their experiences as nurses in the process.

Dr. Siela's knowledge and professional expertise is being incorporated into the Athena Forum Institute® curriculum through her participation as a Course Director and Contributing Faculty. Her professional affiliations include:
