Description

Sometimes care providers in nursing homes feel confused and even threatened by the idea of resident rights. However, the fact that someone enters a nursing home and is now dependent upon others to provide the care they once provided for themselves does not mean they must relinquish any of the basic civil rights every citizen enjoys.
Providers may fear that residents will abuse or mismanage their rights, such as choosing inappropriate clothes or foods, using the telephone constantly or selecting a doctor whose practice is 100 miles away. However, nursing home residents are adults who, instead of being constantly protected, need to exercise their right of choice and experience the consequences. We all learn through our experiences. Awareness of their rights empowers residents to feel independent, and to feel that they still retain some measure of control over their own lives.
