Description

The definition of PCOS has evolved significantly over the years.

Initially described in the 1930's, the disorder has more recently been defined by a consensus conference. Requiring 2 out of the 3 clinical criteria for diagnosis, these are routinely referred to as the Rotterdam criteria.

PCOS has both reproductive and non-reproductive concerns, which is an important determination to assess since treatment is fundamentally different based on conception goals.

Coexisting hyperandrogenism issues: Hirsutism, Alopecia, Acne, Metabolic syndrome, Diabetes mellitus.

More research is needed regarding genetic predisposition and environmental exposure.
