Toshua Kennedy is a well-trained nurse scientist and a 2015 PhD graduate from the Medical
University of South Carolina. The title of Kennedy’s dissertation was Picturing Life: Using Photo
Journals to Explore Challenges and Supports for Women Living with HIV. In the study, Kennedy
demonstrated leadership attributes while sharing ownership with study participants and was
able to foster relationships that led to trust and openness among the focus group. Toshua
received dual Master’s Degrees in Nursing and Public Health in 2007 from the University of
South Carolina and became nationally certified as a Community and Public Health Clinical
Nurse Specialist. Toshua Kennedy became a nurse in 1994 from Midlands Technical College
and received her Baccalaureate Degree from USC Upstate (formerly USC Spartanburg) in
1997.
Toshua Kennedy has nearly ten years of teaching experience in face-to-face and online settings
at the University of South Carolina Upstate. Kennedy teaches Community and Public Health
Nursing and Leadership in Nursing Practice to four-year nursing students and to practicing
nurses pursuing a Bachelorette Degree (RN-BSN). Further demonstrating leadership and
initiative, Toshua created and currently teaches two nursing electives to RN-BSN students. The
course are titled Sexually Transmitted Disease and Nursing Care and Health Equity. Kennedy
teaches Theoretical and Conceptual Foundations for Nursing to graduate students pursuing a
Master’s Degree and Clinical Nurse Leader Certificate. Kennedy has been selected mentor to
new employees, currently provides orientation to new employees and in partnership with two
other faculty member Kennedy created a new student peer mentoring program entitled
INSPIRE. The program is designed to foster an atmosphere that is nurturing and professional
for future nurses enrolled at the University of South Carolina Upstate.
As a leader and an expert in community and public health strategies, Kennedy serves in her
community to provide evidence-based approaches for healthy decision-making as seen in the 8-
week education programs at the Taylors Free Medical Clinic. The program targets chronic
disease management for patients with diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. In addition, Toshua
makes community presentations on various topics highlighting wellness and health promotion to
audiences ranging from adolescents to elderly adults.
