Description

This module guides evidence-based comprehensive care and education for women
with pregestational and gestational diabetes before, during and after pregnancy.
Filled with several quick-reference tables, the module’s content underscores
appropriate nursing assessment and management strategies to enhance the
likelihood of healthy outcomes for women whose pregnancies are complicated
by diabetes.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Describe and differentiate pregestational and gestational diabetes mellitus, including incidence and significance of each to pregnancy outcomes for a woman, her pregnancy and her offspring.

2. Explain the pathophysiology, risk factors, screening criteria and management strategies for gestational diabetes mellitus during and after pregnancy.

3. Describe appropriate nursing care for the metabolic management of glucose levels for preconception, antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum women with pregestational and gestational diabetes mellitus.

4. Recognize and address the signs and symptoms of poor glucose control and related complications.
