Description

This case-based presentation will provide you with best practices to help you manage patients with, or at risk for, venous thromboembolism (VTE).

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Identify prevalence rates of VTE, including rates for morbidity and mortality.

2. Discuss professional guidelines that stress methods for assessing risk in patients with VTE and provide algorithms for patient management.

3. Review clinical trial data for approved therapies for the effective and safe management of patients with, and at risk for the recurrence of VTE.

4. Describe methods for ensuring effective communications with patients and caregivers as a means of improving adherence and self-care in patients with VTE.

Melody Heffline, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, ACNP-BC, serves on the IAC Vein Center Board of Directors as a representative of the Society for Vascular Nursing (SVN). Ms. Heffline is currently a nurse practitioner at United Healthcare and Southern Surgical Group in West Columbia, S.C. and is certified as a clinical nurse specialist, acute care nurse practitioner and basic life support provider. After receiving her undergraduate degree in nursing from the University of North Carolina, Ms. Heffline earned her master’s degree in adult nursing at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Ga. and her post master’s as an acute care nurse practitioner at the University of South Carolina. She has spoken at conferences and conventions across the country and has published numerous journal articles. Ms. Heffline has also earned an array of awards, most recently the Jeanne E. Doyle Award from SVN in 2009 and the Certificate of Excellence in Reviewing from the Journal of Perianesthesia in Nursing in 2013. Additionally, she serves as medical missions coordinator for Lake Murray Baptist Church and has completed multiple summer mission trips with Indian Ministries of North America.

Dr. Rudd received her PharmD from the Albany College of Pharmacy of Union University in New York. She completed a primary care pharmacy practice residency through the university of IOWA. She held board certifications in Pharmacotherapy and is credentialed as a certified anti-coagulation care provider and has been recognized nationally for her work as both a clinician and a scholar
