Dr. Jan Basile is a professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Medicine and former chief of Primary Care Service Line at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, both in Charleston, South Carolina. After 31 years, he has recently retired from federal service and is currently working in the Seinsheimer Cardiovascular Health Program at MUSC, a consultative clinic, seeing high-risk patients with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes from throughout South Carolina and the southeast.

Dr. Basile, a past President of the Southern Medical Association, is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and is board certified in both medicine and geriatrics. He is also a clinical specialist in hypertension and a fellow of the American Society of Hypertension. A recipient of many honors and awards, including the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Golden Apple Award at the MUSC College of Medicine, Dr. Basile’s research interests involve hypertension and vascular disease and include outcome-based studies involving hypertension, lipid disorders, and diabetes. He has been involved in many large trials evaluating the effect of pharmacologic therapy on improving patient outcome, including the Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT) and Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) trial, both under the auspices of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. In addition to his contribution to the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure, Dr. Basile has published more than 300 articles, monographs, and book chapters, as well as coauthored a textbook, Hot Topics: Hypertension.

Dr. Basile received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and completed his internship and residency at MUSC, where he was also chief resident.
