Description

Screening and brief intervention provides an opportunity for nurses to intervene early and potentially enhance medical care by increasing awareness of the likely impact of substance use on a patient's overall health. This CEU course provides nurses serving adult populations in general medical settings with the screening tools and procedures necessary to conduct screening, brief intervention, and/or treatment referral for patients who may have, or be at risk of developing, a substance use disorder.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Discuss how long after the initial visit a followup appointment should be scheduled.

2. Explain how nurses should engage patients to improve patient rapport.

3. Examine what a nurse should do if a patient is unwilling to quit their drug and/or alcohol abuse.

4. Identify commonly abused drugs that are not included in many drug screens.
