Description

The Controlled Substances Act (CSA) places all substance which were in some manner regulated under existing federal law into one of five schedules. This placement is based upon the substance's medical use, potential for abuse, and safety or dependence liability. The Act also provides a mechanism for substances to be controlled or decontrolled. That being said, this CEU course provides nurses with an overview of the controlled substances act; the different drug classes; narcotics such as heroin, hydromorphone, methadone, morphine, opium, and oxycodone; stimulants such as amphetamines, cocaine, khat, and methamphetamine; and depressants such as barbiturates.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Enumerate indicators that a drug or other substance has a potential for abuse.

2. Explain why physical exertion increases the hazards of stimulant use.

3. Investigate physical signs of narcotics/opioid overdose.

4. Identify who must obtain a registration issued by the DEA.

5. Describe the withdrawal syndrome and the factors that determine its intensity.
