Description

Many health problems or mental disorders that are encountered in the primary care setting are derived from or are complicated by alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Consequently, nurses are in key positions to manage the care of large numbers of individuals with AUDs. This CEU course provides an overview of the use of medications to treat alcohol use disorders and detailed information about acamprosate, disulfiram, oral naltrexone, and extended-release injectable naltrexone. Factors considered when treating patients with medication for AUDs are also examined.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Discuss which medications should not be used unless the patient's goal is complete abstinence.

2. Enumerate the beneficial effects of medication-assisted treatment for AUDs.

3. Explain the reasons that discontinuation of medications may be considered.

4. Investigate the blood alcohol concentrations that may cause unconsciousness and death due to the disulfiram-alcohol reaction.

5. Compare and contrast key points regarding therapy that nurses should education patients about with regard to acamprosate, disulfiram, oral naltrexone, and extended-release injectable naltrexone.

6. Identify what patients receiving each medication should be monitored for.
