Description

Breastfeeding helps protect both mother and infant from several types of illnesses. This CEU course provides nurses with insight on working with new mothers and discusses why breastfeeding is important, how breast milk is made, what the mother should do before giving birth, common challenges during breastfeeding, and how to answer common questions. Also investigated in this course is how to counsel mothers that must breastfeed a baby with health problems, pumping and storing breast milk, and nutrition for the mother and baby.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Enumerate the diseases or conditions that, compared to breast-fed babies, formula-fed babies have a higher risk of developing.

2. Elucidate the nutritional advice for breastfeeding mothers and the supplements that a breastfed infant should be given.

3. Identify when breastfeeding is not advised.

4. Provide ways to manage the common breastfeeding challenges such as sore nipples, engorgement, plugged ducts, and breast infections.
