Individualise patient care though baseline risk assessment unlike blanket treatment on all patient. Nurses should not overlook the basics of foot care which includes the water temperature when bathing, drying of feet etc.

Description

Diabetes is the leading cause of amputation of the lower limbs, yet as many as half of these amputations might be prevented through simple but effective foot care practices. This CEU course is designed to help nurses implement early identification of the high risk diabetic foot, early diagnosis of foot problems, early intervention to prevent further deterioration that may lead to amputation, and patient education for proper care of the feet and footwear.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Discuss the key elements of preventive care.

2. Explain what a comprehensive foot exam to identify high risk foot conditions should include.

3. Examine what nurses should do during patient education.

4. Identify signs of decreased vascular supply.

5. Describe the most important risk factor for diabetes foot problems.
