Description

This introductory level course offers clinicians utilizing electrotherapy with knowledge to maximize treatment outcomes from the use of electrotherapy in the rehabilitation of patients with muscle weakness. The presentation of muscle weakness and disuse atrophy will be discussed and model will be presented to address this weakness with the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). The use of electrotherapy and surface EMG as a biofeedback tool to facilitate functional recovery in the stroke patient will also be discussed. Specific electrotherapy protocols will be discussed, including the choice of best waveform, best waveform parameters and best practices on how to incorporate electrotherapy in the treatment session. 

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Describe the theoretical background to muscle strengthening using surface electrical stimulation

2. List common conditions for which electrotherapy is indicated as a muscle strengthening approach

3. Describe the electrotherapy protocols appropriate for muscle strengthening in cases of disuse atrophy, post-surgical weakness, impaired joint stability and functional decline

4. Select the most appropriate modality and parameter settings to obtain the desired physiological response

5. Describe the relationship between target motor neuron diameter and stimulation frequency and phase duration
