Description

This course looks at the history of infant formula, the worldwide decline of breastfeeding including the cultural trends and the international as well as U.S. organizations which are active in supporting breastfeeding.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Discuss the effects of separation of baby from the correct habitat and the physical affects of the protest-despair response.

2. Compare and contrast the conventional view of infant sucking vs new research.

3. Describe important triggers for baby's innate neurobehavior to breastfeeding.

4. Describe mother-led breastfeeding and the asymmetric latch-on.

5. Discuss baby-led breastfeeding behaviors of mother and baby.

6.Describe anatomic and structural issues and their influence on breastfeeding skills.

Jane’s career in lactation consulting began as a La Leche League Leader. She became certified as a lactation consultant in 1986 and has been working in various settings since then.
She worked as a lactation consultant at Bedford Memorial Hospital and Carillion Community Hospital in Southern Virginia.
Her areas of particular interest are initiating breastfeeding, breastfeeding twins and super-twins, inducing lactation and re-lactation and nursing the older baby.
