Description

This course focuses on guiding leaders in end-of-life and palliative care regarding the trends within the published scientific literature and the sources of private- and public-sector support for this research. The purpose of this course is to present information on the nature and extent of published EOL PC research themes within the past 14 years, including information on federal research awards and the public and private stakeholders who fund this science.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Discuss the trends and dynamics in regards to race and its consideration in understanding causes of death.

2. Examine the Hospice program services, benefits, funding, aims, and how Hospice began and grew.

3. Explain the differences between end-of-life care, palliative care, and Hospice care.

4. Investigate the goals and components of the programs that have been cultivated through the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Centers.

5. Compare and contrast the different study types and describe how each has its own unique importance in research.

6. Examine the items that were of particular interest for EOL PC published topics.

7. Elucidate the many different topic categories and describe which items fall under each category.

8. Identify the most frequent theme within the literature studied.

9. Describe how knowing who supports the science of EOL PC is invaluable for identifying the sources of research funding, the fostering of new collaborations, and the building of future initiatives to address EOL PC needs.

10. Discuss the most common type of nonfederal organization reported in research publications and how their role is crucial to the patients and their families during death.

11. Explain how no clinical trial, regardless of potential scientific benefit, should compromise the human care that is the foundation of end-of-life research.
