Description

This is part two of the series on the respiratory system. This course will be building off the knowledge already gained in part one, “Respiratory System: The Foundation”. When problems with our lungs and respiratory tract arise it is frightening. The brain is a sensitive organ that needs a constant supply of oxygen. When it is deprived of oxygen the brain cells or neurons begin to die quickly. Once a brain cell perishes it does not come back to life. We can only implement time sensitive rescue efforts if we have the correct knowledge.

This course will investigate three main respiratory diseases; asthma, pneumonia and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which is abbreviated COPD. With good assessment skills, a firm knowledge base, and a well thought out action plan these diseases can be prevented and/or effectively managed. Educating yourself and spreading knowledge to others will move society to greater and greater levels of health and wellness. Take care of your lungs, love your lungs. You only have two of them and you only have one life.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
1. Understand and implement the components of a basic respiratory assessment

2. Identify common signs and symptoms of respiratory distress

3. Define the causes, signs and symptoms of asthma, pneumonia and COPD

4. Understand the management and prevention of asthma, pneumonia and COPD
