Description

The Greek word for breath is pneuma and can be translated as spirit, soul or life. To breathe is to live. Breathing is an activity our bodies perform seventeen to twenty thousand times a day. The most important function of breathing is to provide gas exchange. This means oxygen goes into our bodies and carbon dioxide comes out. Our bodies have the amazing ability to control and regulate our breathing patterns based on our needs. Breath is life. Without the activity of inspiration (breathing in) and expiration (breathing out) life ceases to occur. We need oxygen to live, in fact, our bodies only last a few minutes without it.

When you breathe in air its journey starts at the nostrils. Once air passes through the nasal cavity its next destination is the pharynx. Donn Kropp, our expert registered nurse, will be your entertaining guide as we follow the exciting tale of the oxygen molecule through the respiratory system and lay a comprehensive foundation for your understanding of this life-giving body system.
