Description

We spend a great deal of time at the places we work. Often times the environment and culture around us can be marked by fear, anxiety, stress, and leadership structures that are hierarchical with significant power imbalances. When an environment is controlling, individuals fear being rejected and invalidated which leads them to function at their base level of survival. Conversely, when a work environment is positive and empowering, job satisfaction, morale, and productivity increase. An environment that instills and promotes autonomy, respect, and positivity is essential in the high-paced, high-stress healthcare environment.

While positive workplace cultures are not free of confrontation, it is important to note that confrontation is not combat but strategically applying pressure to expose areas that need help and strength. Three essential elements must occur during confrontation in order to foster a positive workplace culture. First, trust must be established. Second, questions must be asked to uncover the underlying problems or issues. Third, leaders must guide and direct others toward personal responsibility and ownership.

In this course, Danny Silk, MSW will examine fear and anxiety and how they affect the health and well-being of an individual as well as the overall health of a workplace culture. Also in this course, Silk will discuss power dynamics and how settings marked by hierarchical structures can lead to work cultures that are toxic.
