Description

The purpose of this course is to provide nurses with a greater understanding of the current crisis related to opioid abuse in the US, and with the information necessary to recognize and act appropriately in the presence of an opioid-related event.

Objectives

Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, you should be able to:

1. Discuss the increasing prevalence of opioids in drug abuse and drug-related deaths in the United States.

2. Distinguish the difference between opiates and opioids.

3. Name examples of opioids, both natural and synthetic.

4. Identify the primary factor contributing to the rise of opioid abuse in the United States.

5. Name the new diagnosis designated to opioid abuse and/or dependence in the DSM V.

6. Identify signs of opioid abuse

7. Identify signs of opioid overdose

8. Discuss opioid withdrawal and identify likely signs of this.

9. Name the three symptoms signs found in the Opioid Overdose Triad

10. Discuss the initial treatment of an opioid overdose.
