Description

A comprehensive course on Cardiac Arrhythmias by Daniel Hilleman as part of the Advanced Critical Care Therapeutic course. This course includes presentations on:
Antiarrhythmic Drugs
Management of Supraventricular Arrhythmias
Management of Ventricular Arrhythmias

The Advanced Critical Care Therapeutic courseprovides in-depth advanced instruction concerning the pharmacotherapeutic management of commonly encountered critical care diseases.  Emphasis is placed on the efficacy, safety, and comparative value of drug therapy in this highly specialized practice area.  Didactic knowledge of physiology, pharmacology, and drug therapy management is applied to disease states specific to this population.  Didactic instruction is combined with practice case studies and interactive discussions concerning critical care pharmacy-related issues.  Participants may download materials.

Objectives

Antiarrhythmic Drugs: On completion of the course the learner will be able to:
-Know the Vaughn-Williams classification of the antiarrhythmic drugs.
-Be able to describe the effects of the antiarrhythmic drugs on the surface ECG.
-Be able to describe the pharmacokinetics of the antiarrhythmic drugs.
-Be able to describe the cardiac and non-cardiac side effects of the antiarrhythmic drugs.
-Be able to describe the relative therapeutic differences between amiodarone and dronedarone
Management of Supraventricular arrythmias: On completion of the course the learner will be able to:
-Be familiar with the management strategy for hemodynamically unstable bradycardia
-Be able to differentiate the pathophysiology and management of the two most common types of re-entry supraventricular tachycardias
-Understand the consequences of untreated atrial fibrillation
-Describe the management strategies for atrial fibrillation
-Be able to describe the use of anticoagulation in patients with atrial fibrillation
-Describe the use of drug therapy that can be used for pharmacologic conversion of atrial fibrillation
-Describe the use of drug therapy that can be used for ventricular rate control in atrial fibrillation
-Be able to describe the appropriate use of antithrombotic therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation
Management of Ventricular Arrythmias: On completion of this course the learner will be able to:
-Understand what defines ventricular ectopy
-Be familiar with the treatment algorithm for cardiac arrest
-Be familiar with the treatment algorithm for survivors of sudden cardiac death
-Be familiar with the indications for ICD therapy
-Be familiar with the treatment algorithm for monomorphic VT with a pulse
