Description

This course was created to inform licensed health practitioners of this growing epidemic and to foster improved patient safety. It meets the criteria of the Florida Statute 456.013 that mandates a two-hour course on prevention of medical errors as part of the total hours of continuing education required for licensure renewal for the state of Florida, and provides contact hours to participants in other states, as well.

Objectives

Objectives
Identify the factors that impact the occurrence of medical errors, and reflect on the presence of any of these factors in your place of employment.

Consider contraindications and indications for management of errors, recognizing error-prone situations that have been commonly described, and seek to make those situations safer in your own working environment.

Specifically identify pharmacological components of error-prone patient situations respective to your discipline, in the over-all management of patient safety.

Explore processes you and others might use to improve patient outcomes, including aspects of medical documentation and communication, and structured problem solving techniques.

Become aware of your responsibilities for reporting medical errors and the surrounding controversies.

Consider the safety needs of special populations.

Cite needs for public education and empowerment.
