Description

The Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities has mandated that 4 hours of annual in-service training or continuing education must be completed by direct care workers giving care to those with disabilities, and be related to the specific needs of at least one recipient being currently served by the direct care worker. (See Appendix C of the iBudget Handbook.) This course has been created to expand the skills of those giving direct care and attendance to clients with intellectual disabilities and to meet this educational requirement and to meet general continuing education requirements.

Objectives

Objectives
List the three characteristics that define Intellectual Disabilities (ID).

Identify common conditions associated with ID.

Relate the four IQ categories of ID to the percentage of population affect, and the need for supportive care.

Utilize several approaches that will help when communicating with those who have ID.

Relate anxious, aggressive behaviors to the needs the client with ID may have, and their inabilities to communicate sufficiently.

Become familiar with the ABCs of assessing aggressive or anxious behaviors.

Identify physical challenges that my complicate care of those with ID.
