Description

Adjunct and new clinical faculty often come to nursing education as expert practitioners with a strong value for student learning. Because of their clinical expertise, full-time administrators and faculty may assume they are fully prepared to teach. It is critical that adjunct and new clinical faculty have the information they need to fully partner with academic institutions to meet the program outcomes and produce safe graduate nurses. This webinar focuses on the characteristics and learning needs of adjunct and other new clinical faculty by presenting an evidence-based model of mentorship for new faculty and a variety of strategies that academic institutions and individual mentors can use to enhance integration and effective teaching. Objectives Identify some characteristics and needs of adjuncts and new clinical faculty. Apply a mentorship model to determine best practices for facilitating faculty orientation and integration. Describe several practical strategies to help adjunct and new clinical faculty be effective facilitators of learning for nursing students.

Over her career, Kathie Lasater, EdD, RN, ANEF has served as both an academic nurse educator and a staff development/quality improvement specialist in practice. She holds the Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership (Postsecondary) and has been faculty at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Nursing since 1999. She has taught in undergraduate theory and clinical courses as well as graduate education and interprofessionally. She is perhaps best known for the creation of the evidence-based Lasater Clinical Judgment Rubric, an assessment instrument widely used in simulation as well as clinical settings in academe and practice. Dr. Lasater was part of the initial development of the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education’s innovative curriculum and currently serves on the consortium’s Research and Evaluation Committee. Dr. Lasater is a frequent conference speaker and has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, primarily on the topics of clinical judgment and the use of simulation in healthcare education. She is Assistant Editor of "Nurse Education Today" and a regular reviewer for several other journals. [Kathie's other events] Dr. Darlene Del Prato holds a PhD in Post-Secondary Higher Education and a Master of Science as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Maternal-Child Nursing and Women’s Health from Syracuse University. During her 24 years of teaching and administrative experience, Dr. Del Prato has oriented and mentored many full and part-time faculty in associate, baccalaureate and graduate nursing education. She is currently a Professor of Nursing at Keuka College in Keuka Park, New York. Dr. Del Prato’s scholarly interests include educational practices that shape students’ professional formation as nurses, faculty and student incivility, faculty development, and the power of mentoring to transform academic and workplace environments. She has presented at state, national, and international conferences and her work is published in books and peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Del Prato has served on various faculty development initiatives at the state and national level. She is also a regular reviewer for nursing journals and education conferences.
