Description

This course will help increase knowledge in regards to organizational structure, management systems, and information technology. Additionally, the concept of population health, and the determinants that contribute to that health, will be addressed.

Objectives

Objectives
Describe several of the determinants of health and how they contribute to health and to health disparities. Demonstrate steps a nurse might take to identify a health disparity, suggest solutions that are acceptable to the community and engage political support. Explore the types of disasters, as well as the disaster continuum. Explain why nurses need effective leadership, management, and collaboration skills in today’s public health care environment. Examine nursing leadership strategies to enhance patient safety during natural disasters. Explain how nurses provide leadership with care coordination in emergency preparedness. Explain the nursing leader’s role in disaster management planning. Evaluate the various types and characteristics of organizational structures. Analyze organizational structures in relation to their effectiveness. List management structures found in an organizational structure. Review the impact of technology on delivery of care.

Lynnette Leeseberg Stamler, PhD, MEd, BSN, RN, FAAN, is an Associate Dean for Academic Programs at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. A holder of two U. S. degrees and one Canadian degree, she has been active in nursing in two countries and two very different health care systems. Kristin Madsen, MSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, NEA-BC, began her nursing career as an Emergency Nurse at the Inova Fairfax and Fair Oaks hospitals in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area - on the heels of the 9/11 attacks. The extensive training there prepared her for her future roles as a staff RN, Charge RN, Emergency Department (ED) Manager and Director. Sandy Swearingen, PhD, RN, has over 30 years of experience in varied areas of health care. She specializes in Leadership Development, Shared Governance, Staff Satisfaction, and Staff Development. She is a partner with Courageous Healthcare, a company that assists courageous organizational leaders to make human factor improvement in their organizations.
