Description

This lesson will illustrate how leaders must advocate for patient care by influencing stakeholders to achieve organizational excellence and engage in behaviors for the transformation of patient care delivery. Development of business plans, business strategies, and management and evaluation of projects will be discussed.

Objectives
Discuss the rational for creating a business plan when developing new programs and managing projects. Recognize the essential elements of a traditional business plan. Relate the term SWOT Analysis to the entrepreneurial / business planning process Relate the importance of gathering best-practice and best-evidence to support the business planning process. Identify strategies to measure outcomes and maintain quality of new programs and projects. Discuss the new business of health care. Examine seven mechanisms to enable advocacy and influence. Discuss two ways to lead and sustain change in health care.

Robin Toms, PhD, MN, RN, NEA-BC currently coordinates the Nursing Administration track at Texas Woman's University in Houston, Texas. Prior to her faculty appointment, she served in Administrative practice roles including Director of a Medical and Pediatric Center, System Director of Human Resources for a health system in Kansas, Director of Nursing Professional Development and Education for a major cancer center in Texas, and Corporate Chief Learning Officer for a multi-state health system based in Tennessee. She currently teaches courses in Ethics, Policy & Politics, Leadership and Nursing Administration in the graduate and doctoral programs at Texas Woman's University in Houston, Texas. M. Lindell Joseph, PhD, RN is a Clinical Assistant Professor and the MSN/CNL Program Coordinator at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. She teaches innovation, leadership, health systems, and professional nursing courses within the College of Nursing. Prior to joining the University of Iowa, she was the Lead Research Scientist over an eight hospital health care system nursing research program in the Southern United States.
