Description

Screening and Assessment follows a patient with substance use problems who presents in a primary setting and serves as a prototype for screening assessments for substance abuse clinicians. It describes a series of graduated approaches for responding to the substance abuse problems typically encountered. This unit material offers substance abuse clinicians a valuable resource offering perspectives, practical guidelines and screening assessment tools -- serving as a road map through screening, intervention, assessment, referral, specialized treatment and follow-up care.

Objectives

Upon course completion, the student will be able to:
Objective 1:
Identify and apply the process of screening and assessment techniques including: communication theories and techniques, interviewing techniques, considerations in assessing, client needs, resources, strengths and limitations and identification of appropriateness and eligibility.
Objective 2:
Identify substance abuse problems that are encountered and how to approach them effectively.
Objective 3:
Identify graduated approaches to substance abuse issues.
