Description

The number of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is growing worldwide. Over the past 5 years significant advances have been made in identifying several genetic and environmental risk factors for developing ASD. Some of this new emerging research investigates the role of nutraceuticals in treating ASD and supporting evidence shows its use to be very encouraging. Caregivers, parents and healthcare professionals are becoming more aware of the potential benefits of nutraceuticals in the treatment of ASD.

All healthcare professionals must keep up-to-date on the current research and recommend nutraceuticals as appropriate. Nutraceuticals offering potential benefits for ASD include multivitamin and mineral supplementation, vitamin C, methyl-B12, vitamin B6, L-carnitine, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics and carnosine.

Elizabeth will discuss nutraceuticals, their potential benefits, supporting research-based studies and implications for the healthcare professional.
