Description

This presentation aims to inform BASEM members about up to date physiological concepts regarding pain and nociception and the role of analgesics as we understand it. It also introduces the audience to an internationally accepted way to assess and manage pain using an easy to remember new acronym.

Objectives

Introduce readers to the latest pain pathophysiology and assessment
1. To understand the burden of untreated pain
2. to understand the effect on various organ systems due to acute and chronic pain
3. To understand the basic physiology about pain and nociception
4. To understand the principles behind the RAT acronym and the way to use it

I am a practicing Pain and Musculoskeletal Medicine Consultant at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading since 2010 and I am the lead for the inpatient and outpatient service. I have completed my fellowship in UCL and Oxford. I also am the lead pain consultant to the award winning community multidisciplinary pain and spinal service IPASS which I helped establish. I lecture to a wide audience of healthcare professionals and also to patient support groups locally and nationally.
