Description

A sound disease investigation determines the value and usefulness of the results and information obtained. The successful management of any fish disease requires first a proper diagnosis, and this is not the same as identifying the pathogen(s) involved. Critical to any disease investigation is a good understanding of the need, background knowledge and weakness of methods to assess the fish host, environment (husbandry) and associated pathogens. Considerable professional skill, expertise and experience are required to translate these information into a meaningful plan on how to manage, treat and control the disease. The principles behind carrying sound disease investigations and important diseases commonly encountered in the culture of barramundi will be covered. Linking clinical signs to the effects of disease will help an understanding of how they should be managed. The missing knowledge gaps in the evaluation of barramundi health and its diseases will be discussed. It is important that professional and technical personnel at all levels in the chain of events to manage fish health be adequately skilled, knowlgeable and trained. You are only as strong as your weakest link!
