This course covers the typical contact lens terminology. Different types of lenses: scleral, hydrogel and RGP lenses are described. Different wearing schedules are covered. Lens dimensions such as diameter, optical zones, base curves, peripheral curves, thickness, and dioptric power are illustrated. Lens properties including water content, oxygen transmission, and lens material classification are covered. Special designs and uses such as multifocals, monovision, torics, aspherics, lenticulars and reverse geometry lenses are described.

Objectives

Objectives
The objective of the course is to have an individual such as an optometric assistant who is not familiar with contact lens terminology to become conversant with the language of contact lenses. This will allow them to understand the terms the optometrist uses, to be able to explain basic contact lens topics with patients and to interact with the contact lens laboratory.
