Description

This presentation describes the history of Zika virus since its discovery in 1947, the epidemiology of Zika virus infection and how this agent can be transmitted by vector and non-vector mechanisms, symptoms of Zika virus infection and diagnostics, actions to prevent Zika virus transmission, Zika virus infection in animals, and measures taken by state and local agencies across Missouri to plan for the potential introduction of Zika virus into the state.

Objectives

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the epidemiology of Zika virus disease and modes of transmission of Zika virus.
2. Be able to describe actions that can be taken to prevent transmission of Zika virus by various routes.
3. Understand that current studies indicate that domestic animals do not become infected with Zika virus and play no role in Zika virus transmission to humans.

State Public Health Veterinarian

Dr. Pue has a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Oklahoma State University and a Master of Science in Veterinary Preventive Medicine from Ohio State University. He served from 1978 through 1997 in the United States Air Force as a base veterinarian and public health officer. Upon retiring from the Air Force in 1997, Dr. Pue joined the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. He has served as Chief of the Office of Surveillance and Chief of Communicable Disease Control and Veterinary Public Health. He presently serves as the State Public Health Veterinarian.
