Description

The Core Concepts in Study Design session will help the attendee better understand the basics of clinical research design.

Objectives

Identify basic study designs
The attendee should be able to distinguish between descriptive and analytical studies, and should be able to recognize basic case-control, cross-sectional, cohort, and clinical trial designs.
Understand the concept of a primary research question
The attendee should understand the concept of a primary research question and the PICOT concept.
Identify and avoid basic pitfalls of clinical research
The attendee should understand the importance of subject number and power calculations; distinguish between the most common ways to describe frequency (incidence and prevalence); and understand and recognize instances of confounding by indication.

Jamie Burkitt Creedon, DVM, DACVECC
on behalf of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society

Dr. Burkitt Creedon received her DVM from UC Davis in 2000 and completed a small animal rotating internship at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. After completing the small animal ECC residency at the University of California, Davis, in 2005, she became a Diplomate of the ACVECC that year. She has worked in university and private practices since that time.
